How a Heat Pump Water Heater Actually Heats Your Water
A heat pump water heater looks like an ordinary tank from the outside, with one obvious difference on top: a small unit with a fan. That fan is doing most of the work — and understanding what it's actually doing is what makes the placement rules make sense instead of feeling like fine print.
It Moves Heat Instead of Making It
A standard electric tank makes heat directly with a resistance element, the same principle as a toaster or space heater, converting electricity to heat close to one-to-one. A heat pump water heater instead uses a small compressor and refrigerant loop — the same principle as the heat pump heating your house — to pull ambient heat out of the surrounding air and concentrate it into the water.
