South Portland Heat Pumps, From the Harbor Edge to the Jetport
South Portland split off from Cape Elizabeth in 1895 and became a city three years later. Today it covers about 12 square miles of land between Portland Harbor, the Fore River and Long Creek, with Portland to the north, Westbrook to the west, and Cape Elizabeth and Scarborough to the south. Around 26,900 people live in its roughly 12,800 housing units. The Census Bureau American Community Survey (2020–2024) dates the median South Portland home to 1968, and about 36% of the housing stock was built between 1940 and 1979, a larger mid-century slice than Cumberland County's 31.5%.
Housing types are split fairly evenly. A little over half of homes are detached single-family houses, about a quarter are apartments or condos in complexes of five units or larger, and roughly 58% are owner-occupied. For heat, oil leads at about 38% of occupied homes, utility gas is close behind at 34%, and electricity serves around 18%, a figure that includes both heat pumps and baseboard. Propane is uncommon here at under 5%. Unitil, the company behind Northern Utilities, names South Portland in its list of Maine gas communities, so gas service is a real factor on many streets. That matters for more than fuel prices: it can decide which rebate tier a household may claim, a point we cover on the replacement page below.
Winter numbers for the area are easy to find, because the main runway of the Portland International Jetport lies within South Portland. The National Weather Service lists a normal of 6,795 heating degree days a year at the Jetport and about 68.7 inches of snow in a normal season. Under the state energy code, Cumberland County is classed as climate zone 6. Those figures explain why capacity at low outdoor temperatures and a raised, well-drained spot for the outdoor unit matter so much in this city. Homes close to the water also catch more wind off the harbor than houses a mile inland, which affects both heat loss and where equipment should face.
Neighborhoods range from Ferry Village, Knightville and Mill Creek near the harbor to Thornton Heights, Meetinghouse Hill, Redbank and Cash Corner farther inland. Southern Maine Heat Pumps, a family-owned company from Gorham with more than three decades of experience, handles new systems, repair and annual service there for Mitsubishi, Daikin, Samsung and other brands. Because we are on Efficiency Maine's registered vendor list, we can also prepare the rebate claim with you. Getting to Know South Portland
During World War II, South Portland's shipyards launched more than 230 Liberty ships for the war effort, employing some 30,000 workers at their peak — many of them women welders. The city's beloved Bug Light and the Liberty Ship Memorial at Bug Light Park still mark where those hulls slid into Casco Bay.
Much of South Portland's housing went up for those shipyard families, and thousands of those postwar capes and bungalows still heat with oil today. Converting them to cold-climate heat pumps is some of the most satisfying work we do — cutting fuel bills dramatically while adding the summer cooling these homes never had.

“I was being serviced by another local company as I had a crack in my Daikin Drip Pan. The previous company came out 3 times and finally diagnosed it. They ordered the part and then never showed up again even though the part was under warranty. I found Southern Maine on a google search and gave them a call. Sam called my back immediately.”
