Before anyone talks equipment, we work through a Manual J load calculation, going room by room through insulation levels, window area and orientation, air-sealing, and ceiling height rather than just tallying square footage. Two houses of identical size can call for noticeably different equipment once those details are actually counted.

Sizing off the old furnace or boiler's rating, or a rough square-footage rule of thumb, is the most common way a heat pump ends up mismatched to a house. An oversized unit short-cycles, dehumidifies poorly, and wastes both installed cost and rebate dollars; an undersized one falls behind exactly on the coldest nights it's needed most.

In Southern Maine, the outdoor unit's placement is as much a snow-and-ice decision as an aesthetic one. We mount it on a stand or wall bracket that keeps the base above expected snow accumulation for the site, rather than setting it directly on the ground where drifting or ice can block airflow or flood the base pan. Clearance on all sides matters for airflow, and the unit should sit somewhere winter roof-shed and driveway plowing won't bury it.

The refrigerant line set between the outdoor and indoor units runs through a clean, sealed wall penetration and gets insulated along its full length. A line set left exposed to UV or physical damage is one of the more common sources of a slow refrigerant leak years down the road — a problem that shows up as quietly declining performance, not a sudden failure.

After the hardware is up and connected, the line set gets pulled down to a vacuum to boil off any trapped moisture and air, held there to confirm it isn't leaking back up, and only then does refrigerant go in to the amount the manufacturer specifies for that exact line-set length. Homeowners rarely see this part, which is exactly why it gets rushed on a bad job — a unit that never had its line set properly evacuated will still blow warm air the first week, then lose capacity and put extra strain on the compressor as trapped moisture works through the system over the following seasons.

We read refrigerant pressures on a gauge manifold before signing off, instead of trusting that the factory charge is still correct once real-world line-set length and elevation differences are factored in, and those readings go on the paperwork we leave with you.

Every brand calls its equipment "cold-climate" these days, but the number that actually matters is the one buried in the engineering data: how much heating capacity is left once the outdoor temperature falls toward and below zero. All three lines we install publish that figure.
