About 63.5% of Cape Elizabeth homes heat mainly with oil, far above Portland's 31% or South Portland's 38%. In a house with seven or more rooms, that adds up to a lot of fuel over a Maine winter. Shifting that load to cold-climate heat pumps changes both the fuel bill and how evenly the house heats, since each zone responds to its own thermostat. To earn the whole-home rebate, the boiler may stay hooked up for emergencies only, while the new equipment handles the heating from the first cold snap to spring.

Before removing the boiler from everyday use, look at what else it does. Many oil boilers also heat domestic hot water through a tankless coil or an indirect tank. Once the boiler is idle most of the year, water heating needs its own source, and a heat pump water heater is often the natural partner for a heat pump conversion. It needs enough space around it and a place to drain condensate, which a basement usually provides. Making both changes in one project also lets us plan electrical capacity for the new equipment together rather than piecemeal.

A smaller group of homes, roughly 10.5%, heat with utility gas. If yours is losing capacity, leaking, or failing more often, we compare repair costs with a current model rated for heating well below 0°F. We do not reuse the old line set without inspecting it, checking that its diameters suit the new unit, and pressure-testing it; lines that do not pass are replaced. We check the outdoor stand and wall penetrations while we are there. If the existing unit is still healthy, it may stay in service as part of the new layout, and we will tell you when that is the better call.
