Bridgton began as a land grant called Pondicherry in 1768 and was incorporated in 1794. Today it spreads over about 64 square miles, 7.45 of them water, running from Long Lake on the east to Moose Pond, a dammed lake shared with Denmark and Sweden that drains toward the Saco River, on the west. Highland Lake reaches north from downtown to the Sweden line, and its shoreline is lined with houses and seasonal cabins. The town also takes in North Bridgton around Bridgton Academy, South Bridgton near Adams Pond, Sandy Creek at Routes 107 and 117, and West Bridgton along Route 302.

Summer has shaped Bridgton for a long time. Vacationers came by the narrow-gauge Bridgton and Saco River Railroad and lake steamers before the automobile, and children's summer camps still dot the shores, including one in West Bridgton that has operated for more than a century. The housing figures reflect it: the Census Bureau American Community Survey (2020–2024) counts about 4,620 housing units but only about 2,380 occupied as someone's usual home, just over half. That is the lowest year-round share of any town in our service area, just below Wells.

Bridgton's housing is also unusually mixed. Detached single-family houses account for roughly 74% of units, and about 14% are mobile or manufactured homes, more than three times the Cumberland County share of 4%. The median home has about 5.1 rooms, smaller than the county's 5.5, and the median year built is 1985. Close to a third of the housing dates from 2000 or later, while about 11% predates 1940, much of it in and around the village.

For heat, about 52% of occupied homes rely on oil or kerosene and roughly 27% use propane, about double the county rate. Electricity, a category that includes both heat pumps and baseboard, is the main heat in around 11% of homes. The Maine Public Utilities Commission's roster of gas distributors does not name Bridgton, so heating here means oil and propane deliveries along long rural roads. Cumberland County is classed as climate zone 6A, and at this distance from the coast, cold-climate equipment is not optional.
