Brunswick sits at the head of tide on the Androscoggin River, where the water drops about 41 feet over three stages of falls before the river reaches the north end of Casco Bay. Neighborhoods along the river and the Pleasant Street corridor face a different kind of winter than the shore roads running down toward Maquoit Bay, where wind coming off open water finds every gap in siding and window trim. Propane covers roughly 15% and electricity about 13%, a category that lumps modern heat pumps together with older baseboard. Wood is a small slice at around 3%. Owner occupancy runs about 71%, so close to three in ten households rent, and in those homes the choice of heating system usually rests with the building owner rather than the tenant paying the bill.
