On the electrical side, Maine draws a narrow line: minor repair work that doesn't touch permanent wiring, like replacing a failed contactor or a capacitor, can fall inside the state's minor-repair exemption and doesn't need a new permit. But if a repair involves adding or altering a circuit or disconnect — say, upgrading undersized wiring found during a service call — that crosses into work that does need an electrical permit, pulled through Eliot's Code Enforcement Office the same as a new installation.
