Ductless Mini-Split Installation

Much of Saco's older housing was built around radiators or a single furnace, never around central air, and that is exactly where ductless mini-splits earn their keep. A wall-mounted head needs only a small hole for its refrigerant lines, condensate drain and control wire, so heating and cooling can reach a room without opening plaster ceilings to run ductwork. Because each head has its own setpoint, a bedroom can run cooler than the living room without anyone fighting over a central thermostat.

Rentals and condos are a big part of the picture. One head can fix that space, and more can be added in later years. When several rooms need coverage at once, a multi-zone heat pump system connects multiple indoor heads to one outdoor unit, though for Efficiency Maine purposes only single-zone outdoor units carry their own rebate.

Seasonal and shoreline houses along Saco Bay raise different questions. A cottage used from May to October may mainly want cooling and some shoulder-season warmth, while a year-round conversion calls for a cold-climate model rated to keep heating well below 0°F and an outdoor unit set where drifting snow and salt spray are least severe. Insulation and air sealing often matter as much as the equipment in those conversions.
