Ductless Mini-Split Installation

Yarmouth's village has houses from the Federal period onward. The Mitchell House on Main Street dates to about 1800, and the Captain S. C. Blanchard House, an Italianate home built in 1855 for a shipbuilder, sits a short walk away. Houses of that age were never designed for ductwork, and cutting chases through their plaster and trim is a poor trade. Ductless mini-splits avoid it: a slim indoor head, a small line set and a single hole through the wall.

The work is in the details. In a formal front room, a floor-mounted console tucked under a window often looks better than a high wall unit. In a bedroom under the eaves, a compact wall head placed on the gable end keeps it clear of sloped ceilings. Line sets can run through closets, down into the basement or along a less visible side of the house in a cover painted to match the clapboards, which keeps the street face of the building unchanged.

Mid-century houses are a different job. A 1950s cape with a finished upstairs typically has two small bedrooms that run colder than the first floor, and one head at the top of the stairs rarely reaches both. Condominiums and apartments are another Yarmouth feature. About one in eight homes is in a building with five or more units, and units in buildings like these are often heated with electric baseboard. A ductless head can replace baseboard room by room, adding air conditioning in the bargain, though in a condo it usually needs association approval for the outdoor unit location. Indoor heads are quiet enough for a bedroom, and each one runs on its own remote or wall control, which suits units where several people keep different schedules.
