in Buxton, Maine

Buxton spreads across about 41 square miles of York County, nearly all of it land, and it is drained by the Saco River and the Little River. Its settled places are strung along the river and the old roads: Salmon Falls and Tory Hill, Chicopee, Groveville, Bar Mills, West Buxton and Buxton Center. Bonny Eagle Pond, about 211 acres, lies in the northern part of town, and Central Maine Power operates the Skelton Dam near Union Falls. Of the town's roughly 3,900 housing units, about 13% were counted as vacant in the Census survey, a far smaller vacant share than in the lake towns to the northwest.

Of the 48 towns in our service area, none leans on heating oil more than Buxton. According to the Census Bureau American Community Survey (2020–2024), about 74% of occupied homes here heat mainly with fuel oil or kerosene, compared with roughly 61% across York County and 55% statewide. Wood is the main fuel in about 9% of homes, well above the county's roughly 6%, propane in about 8.5%, and electricity, heat pumps and baseboard combined, in just over 5%. The survey records essentially no homes on utility gas.

The houses themselves span centuries. About 19% of Buxton's housing predates 1940, and the Salmon Falls (East) Historic District, the Royal Brewster House, Elden's Store, the First Congregational Church and the Buxton Powder House are all listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The median home dates from 1981, just over three quarters of units are detached single-family houses, and about 8% are mobile homes. Some 80% of households own their home, and the median home has five and a half rooms, the same as the York County median. The town's population is about 8,500. Median home age and size both sit close to Maine's statewide figures, which makes Buxton a fairly typical rural southern Maine housing market.

For a heating plan, that profile points to modest-sized, owner-occupied houses running an oil boiler or furnace, sometimes with a woodstove doing part of the work. Those homes have the most to gain from moving off delivered fuel, and also the most questions about how a heat pump handles a hard inland January.
