When the median house has more than seven rooms, a heat pump design stops being a single-unit decision. Many Cumberland homes built in the 1980s and later are two-story colonials with a finished basement, an attached garage and bedrooms spread across both floors. The heating load is spread out too, and the equipment has to follow it. We measure each room, account for window area and insulation levels, and run a Manual J–style load calculation before recommending anything. An existing oil or propane boiler may stay, but only as emergency backup, and dual-fuel combinations do not qualify. Multi-zone outdoor units are not rebatable on their own, though their capacity counts toward the total. Rebates run $1,000, $2,000 or $3,000 per eligible single-zone outdoor unit depending on income, plus a $500 bonus for upgrades finished and claimed in 2026.
