in Cumberland, Maine

Cumberland is a mainland town of about 26 square miles, a little more than three of them water, running from Cumberland Foreside on Casco Bay through Cumberland Center to West Cumberland on the Windham line. Chebeague Island belonged to Cumberland until July 2007, when it became a town of its own, so today's Cumberland is almost entirely a mainland community of roughly 8,600 people. Knight's Pond Preserve on the North Yarmouth border and Twin Brook near the center give a sense of how much of it is still woods and fields.

The homes are large and mostly lived in by their owners. The Census Bureau American Community Survey (2020–2024) counts about 3,300 housing units, and around 91% of occupied ones are owner-occupied, well above the county figure of about 70%. The median home has about seven and a half rooms, compared with five and a half countywide. More than four in five are single-family detached houses, and the median year built is 1984, with well over a quarter built since 2000.

Fuel use splits in an unusual way. Roughly half of Cumberland's occupied homes heat with oil, about 23% use utility gas, which is higher than the county share, and about 12% use propane. Only around 8% list electricity as the main fuel, noticeably below the county's 14.5%, and that electric figure includes both heat pumps and baseboard. In other words, a smaller share of Cumberland homes have made the switch so far than in many neighboring towns.
