Kittery is Maine's southernmost town and its oldest incorporated one, chartered in 1647, sitting on a peninsula and estuary bounded by the Piscataqua River, Spruce Creek, Spinney Creek and Chauncey Creek, directly across the water from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Kittery also has the oldest housing stock of the three towns in this batch: the median home was built in 1965, with 24.8% of units predating 1940 and 46.3% — nearly half — built before 1960. That's an older profile than either Sanford (median 1975) or York (median 1977), and it means a larger share of Kittery homes were framed and finished before central ductwork or whole-house forced air was standard practice, which shapes which kind of heat pump equipment tends to fit a given house.

Heating fuel here sits between its neighbors: about 60.2% of Kittery households heat mainly with fuel oil or kerosene — higher than York's 55% but a bit below Sanford's 62.6% — with bottled or tank gas at 18.1% and electricity at 13.4%.
