in North Yarmouth, Maine

North Yarmouth is an inland town of about 21 square miles, almost all of it land, with barely a fifth of a square mile of water. The Royal River runs through it, Route 115 and Route 231 carry most of the traffic, and Walnut Hill serves as the village center. The town sits at roughly 230 feet above sea level, farther from the moderating effect of Casco Bay than Yarmouth or Cumberland, and it shares Knight's Pond Preserve with Cumberland on their common border. Most roads are lined with woods, fields and homes on generous lots rather than the tighter village grids found closer to the coast, and many properties sit at the end of long driveways where winter access and snow storage are part of daily life.

It is about as purely single-family as a Maine town gets. The Census Bureau American Community Survey (2020–2024) counts about 1,600 housing units for roughly 4,200 residents, and around 94% are single-family detached houses. The survey records no buildings of five or more units and no mobile homes. About 87% of occupied homes are owner-occupied, the median home has close to seven rooms, and the median year built is 1983, with about a third of the stock built between 1980 and 1999.

Heating oil is the default. About 60% of occupied homes burn oil or kerosene, higher than the Cumberland County share of about 46% and above the statewide 55%. Propane adds roughly 15%, wood about 6%, and around 11% list electricity, which includes both heat pumps and electric baseboard. Only about 4.5% report utility gas as their main fuel, a small share compared with the neighboring coastal towns, so most North Yarmouth houses rely on fuel that arrives by truck.
